Parent Meeting

The NCR Swim Team Board of Directors and the Coaching Staff hold a special Parent Meeting that is mandatory for all parents to attend. This is held on pool grounds (usually under the canopy). Notification for this event is sent out via email (be sure to get on the email list!) the week before the meeting, and will now be included in the NC Pool Newsletter sent to all member homes in mid-March. The meeting takes usually no more than an hour.

We go over the current schedule for the year, coaching staff, other events expected and their dates, rule changes, any swim suit changes, parental responsibilities and finances for the previous and coming year.

At least one parent from every swimmer family is expected to attend, and we'll open the floor for questions during the meeting. An agenda will be provided, both before and during the meeting

Time Trials

Picture
No Time Trials for the 2021 Season
Coaches need a basic idea of who can do what and in what times in actual competition. Time Trials (held on the Saturday prior to our first dual meet at NC Pool) are held to determine that. We have an actual dress rehearsal of what a meet is like, complete with full set-up (minus the concessions), starter, officials, timers. There are no awards or ribbons given out at the meet. We start at 8:30 am (usual meet time on Saturdays) and run through all the individual events (Fly, Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Individual Medley) but no relays. Meet generally is done by 10:30 or 1100 am. Time Trials are held rain or shine.

Pasta Pot Luck

An eating event held typically on the Fridays prior to our home meets at the pool (usually 6:30 pm). We load our swimmers up on carbs by having parents provide pasta, fruit salads and more in family size portions to share with the team. Swimmers and Parents and siblings are invited, but we ask that each family provide something like spaghetti, lasagna, pizza, potato salad, coleslaw, desserts, etc for at least 8 people.  An announcement will be made about when these will happen.

Firecracker Relays

No Firecracker Relay for the 2021 Season
We invite at least four other teams to come together at NC Pool to hold an evening fun relay meet during the week prior to the 4th of July. Meet starts at 6:30 pm, but we need help setting up the pool to regular meet standards plus team areas by 4 pm. Swimmers should be at the pool no later than 5:15 pm. Meet ends generally around 8:30 -9 pm. NOTE: Parents will be asked to supply a family pack of boneless, skinless, UNFROZEN chicken breasts to cook for the event, and brought to the pool for storage the weekend before Relays. The team will cut them up and marinade them usually a day or two prior to the Relays taking place. You will be notified via email and the website of the particulars for that year.

This is one of the team's biggest fundraisers of the year (outside of Divisionals) and we expect ALL parents to assist in something on this day. We especially need assistance in our concessions, since we cook/sell more food at the Relays than any other time during the year. Swimmers and parents from all teams come to our meet very hungry and it takes an army to feed them.

The events run at the meet are ONLY relays, and every swimmer is expected to participate. No Awards or ribbons are given out (except the coaches relay) and the grand finale is our 10 person Crescendo event, where one boy and girl from every age group participate. It is absolutely one of the best meets for fun and team spirit you'll ever see....

Divisionals Pep Rally

Every year, at home or away, on the Friday before Divisionals, we have a Pep Rally to hype and psych up the team (and the parents too). The coaches tell their ghostly stories to the team, then we eat pizza (provided by the team) and paint cars (glass only) and if home, chalk sidewalk and steps.

Loads of fun for all. The team also provides a 5 gallon jug of liquid refreshment for the kids too. Note to parents: bring some car paint (washable type, please) and maybe some sidewalk chalk also (if Divisionals are at home).

NCR Swim Marathon

This event is an overnight camp out, while our swimmers, parents and friends swim from about 6 - 10 pm on a Saturday night, and then picks up again in the early morning from about 8 am-12noon on Sunday. This is a fund-raiser to raise money based on how many laps each swimmer completes. This is always a fun event.

Swim Team Banquet

At the end of the season (usually the Sunday after Divisionals at 6:30 pm) we hold our annual Swim Team Banquet. Featured are age group points awards, total points awards, coaches awards (one for each coach) Swim-up awards and the Vera Cope Weinbach award, given to an outstanding swimmer both in the pool and contributions to the team by Coach Harris.

The Whaler's Meet

Swim team is more than just swimming...it's Family Fun!
One practice is set aside for The Whalers Meet. Instead of practice that evening, the swim team competes against the parents and swim team alumni in a variety of dry land and swimming events, such as:
  • Egg on spoon race
  • Egg toss
  • Underwater Swim Relay
  • Keep the Sponge Dry race
  • ...and more!
When the competition is over (or whenever hunger hits!), pizza is served to the competitors.

Other Activities

Knights of Columbus Mini-Meet
This meet is usually held on the Sunday prior to the Divisional meet at the Prince Georges Council K of C pool on Cherry Hill Road in College Park. It is designed exclusively for 10 and under swimmers, and is further defined by having each age group swim separately.  If there is sufficient interest, the team will support sending swimmers to this event.
